The Economist publishes an article about the Darpa Robotic Challenge (DRC) that's financing with a 80 Mn US $ budget the research on robots. In december 2013 17 projects were presented at an Darpa event, and the best will benefit of rewards till 1 Mn US $.
In the line up more recent project held by Japan and US (but also by S. Korea and Germany).
Despite the science fiction and A.I. attempts, robots have no ability to substitute complex human activities without a human assistance, they are seen as extentions, not replacement, of human beeings..
The goal of the most relevant projects is to employ robots assisted by operators in critical areas inaccessible to humans, such as a stricken nuclear power station or chemical plant.
